Let's talk about age

I remember quite well when my language professor reminded us one time that, "it is unethical to ask an elder of his/her age." Well, she must be right. However, some of my classmates in language class weren't really convinced about her view, they tried to get other teacher's point of view, also from a lady professor of almost same age as our language prof. She was our teacher in literature. Her views went this way, "asking about one's age depends on one's sensitivity or openness about the idea. If you were to ask me about my age, well, that's fine with me. I am open to it."

Well, talking about sensitivity is a lot also different from talking about acceptance. Whether we like it or not, we will age. I've known some who cower over the idea that they're already in their early and mid 40's. They feel awkward to think about aging in their part. Sometimes I wonder what is it really about aging that we all are afraid to look at. Isn't it wonderful to realize that we have gone far enough in life? Well, unless one has aged and yet hasn't learned from life yet. I personally respect how some people see the aging thing as a big issue. To ask or not to ask about it..it doesn't really matter to me. But what really matters is that, even when we keep the idea of getting older within ourselves each year, we'll never forget to thank God about what we have become as a person to be so blessed to enjoy more about the things in life. :)

modern day best practices on ethics consider asking one's age, esp women an invasion of privacy hehe :)

It matters not when one is young but those in their middle ages hate to be asked. It's vanity for sure but we must remember that man starts searching for that fountain of youth the moment he reaches 40.

Lady Nyl, our age is a point of great insecurity when a person holds the his of her chest the preconceived ideas about what should be done in a life.

It can be a real challenge emotionally when faced with friends who (seem) to be doing better than you. Also, few people admit the great fear that perhaps they have failed to prepare for the fast coming future. The arrival of 30, 40 year landmark birthdays are frightening to those who thought more should have been accomplished...
